The Health Benefits in Spices

Have you added your food with spices? If you’ve not done yet, why don’t you add some spices to your food. Researcher revealed that spices were good for our health. You’ve probably already known that spices are benefit for us. At this point I’m gonna share the benefits of some spices.

Chili, who doesn’t like chili at all? If you don’t like chili, I suggest you must be fond of chili. Capsaicin in chili has already known as a good fat burner. Chili can be anti-inflammatory. And study found that chili improves circulation, enhances memory, and opens respiratory passages. Chili usually uses with meat, chicken and poultry. Chili is fashionable in Asian and Mexican dishes.

Garlic, actually I don’t like the smell of garlic, but who knows garlic has many vitamins and minerals contained in it. There’re vitamins A, B and C as well potassium and selenium, garlic also has a number of beneficial phytochemicals, such as polyphenols and sulfides, and a relatively high amount of adenosine contained in garlic, a biochemical compound which important for cell metabolism. The University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom revealed that garlic could help prevent periodontitis and other diseases of the mucous membrane of the mouth. Morlo a member of Germany's Nutrition and Dietetics Association said "It's been proven that they lower the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood -- blood fat levels”. To have the health benefits of garlic, Morlo suggested to consuming it regularly, preferably every day.

Ginger can be warmed up the body. According to New York Obesity Research Center, about half a teaspoon of dried ginger for a dish or drinks a cup of tea at breakfast, can burn more the calories after eat. Ginger is usually used in many Asian dishes, but also in cakes, biscuits, desserts and with fruit and juices. And my favorite is ginger chips, it’s blended coconut and ginger, the taste is crispy and rather spicy.

Cinnamon can protect against Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Study found that cinnamon could play a role in everyday to manage the blood sugar (glucose) levels and other cardiovascular disease (CVD). Richard Anderson, a scientist at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center of the U.S has done studies on cinnamon and diabetes. He said “the spice mimics the action of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. It may stimulate insulin receptors on fat and muscle cells the same way insulin does. It allows an excess sugar to move out of the blood and into the cells”.

Turmeric has an active ingredient called cur cumin, a compound that rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Study found that turmeric protects and improves health. Turmeric helps prevent and treat : Acne, allergies, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, asthma, cancer, cholesterol problems, colitis (inflammatory bowel disease), cystic fibrosis, depression, dermatitis, type 2 diabetes, eczema, eye infection, flatulence, gallbladder disease, gout, gum disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, itching, liver disease, macular degeneration, obesity, pain, Parkinson’s disease, pollution side effects, psoriasis, rash, scleroderma, stroke, wounds (Aggarwal, 2012).

White dots and nials

When I was kid, I wondered why there’re white dots and sometimes lines on my fingernails. I just thought what happened to my nails? I told my problem to my friends, and my friends said “oh I know what it is, if you get white dots on your right fingernails, it means you have secret admirers, but if you get the white dots on your left nails, it means there’s someone hates you. And how many do you have secret admirers or haters? It depends on number of dots you have”. I rather believed it but not much, I was still curious until my sister said “I read a magazine, and they said white spots on nails happened because someone was lack of calcium, it signs of calcium deficiency”. I thought it made sense though, till I found an article which explained about white dots on nails.

To clarify the information I heard from my sister, The Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported “There is no evidence to support a relationship between the white flecks and calcium or any other nutritional deficiency. Of course it is possible that people who have white flecks in their fingernails may coincidentally be deficient in calcium. White spots in fingernails may result from minor damage caused by bumping the nails into hard surfaces like bench tops or machinery. These white flecks are different from the white bands that are observed in nails of some undernourished children in developing countries, and in people who have low blood protein levels for various reasons.”

In fact, white dots on nails are called leukonychia, and are very common. It happens when you get trauma or injury to base of your nails. By the time the white dots appear, it does approximately six weeks after the injury and maybe you’ve forgot about banging or knocking your fingers. But don’t worry, just for a while white dots are around your nails, because your nails grow up and white dots will disappear as your nails grow. Though, it can take more than eight months for nails to grow out completely. Just remember when wooden chair hit my fingernail accidentally, time went on white line showed up on my fingernail and I proved it insensibly.

So, white dots or lines aren’t sign a lack of calcium even haters or secret admirers, those are only folklore. A study found that if all of your nails display white spots or streaks, leukonychia could be connected to serious condition such as anemia, cardiac disease, cirrhosis, diabetes or kidney disease. So you’ve gotta pay attention about strange condition of your fingernails J

Myths of Chocolate

Who likes chocolate? By the way I like chocolate, it’s not about the taste because chocolate is bitter without sugar, but I confess chocolate reduces my feeling stressed. Chocolate changes my mood, from bad to good even the best feeling. At leisure, I found an article about chocolate myths. The title is “Top 11 Chocolate myths” and thank to Melissa Breyer, Mother Nature Network  who gave me the information about chocolate myths.

Let’s start from germinal of chocolate. The Latin name of cacao tree is Theobroma cacao, it means food of gods. In the 17th century, chocolate in drinking form was a fashionable drink for European elite. They believe it to have nutritious, medicinal and aphrodisiac properties. In recent years, they admit that chocolate lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks. What a magic chocolate is! You know exact there’s a myths about chocolate, some says chocolate isn’t good as you think for health. Oh let’s check it out!

Those are some myths of chocolate that the most interesting for me.
  • Is that true that chocolate increases bad cholesterol? Even as it’s true that chocolate contains cocoa butter, which is high in cholesterol. But study has confirmed that chocolate doesn’t raise bad cholesterol, and for some people chocolate actually lowers cholesterol levels.
  • Chocolate activates tooth decay and cavities. Study from Osaka University in Japan found that parts of cocoa bean, the main ingredient of chocolate can impede mouth bacteria and tooth decay.
  • Chocolate makes you gain weight. I remembered it when my friend refused to eat chocolate though it’s an ounce chocolate bar and said she was diet. What the heck? :D But you know a large study funded by the National Institutes of Health found this: Consuming a small amount of chocolate each of five days during a week was linked to a lower BMI, even if the person ate more calories overall and didn't exercise more than other participants.
  • Eating sugar and chocolate can add to stress. A study found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in the bodies of people feeling highly stressed.
  • Chocolate causes acne that what my friends tell me. In fact, an extensive review in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that "diet plays no role in acne treatment in most patients … even large amounts of chocolate have not clinically exacerbated acne."
These are some myths of chocolate I shared to you. Chocolate is benefit. So what are you waiting for? I recommend you to Eat Chocolate!

a house cat or an African lion caged

Which animal must eat a larger proportion of its weight food each day: a house cat or an African lion caged in a zoo?

The house cat must eat a larger proportion food each day, because a house cat has a higher metabolic rate. Metabolic rate is a total amount of energy an animal uses in a unit of time. The house cat usually actives and has higher metabolic rates during daylight hours and sometimes at night or during the hours of dusk and dawn to kill its prey, for example mice. But an African lion caged in a zoo, usually actives during daylight hours, and perhaps at night a lion caged in zoo is only idle, it doesn’t kill its prey because a lion is in the zoo not in the forest. Physiologists have decided that amount of energy it takes to keep up each gram of body weight is contrary related to body size. The higher metabolic rate of a smaller animal’s body tissues like a house cat requires in proportion greater rate of transfer of oxygen to the tissues. One hypothesis has explained about the opposite connection between metabolic rate and body size is that the smaller mammal like a house cat also has higher breathing rate, blood volume, and heart rate. The smaller animal has the greater the energy rate of maintaining an unchanging body temperature. It means the smaller animal is better its surface area to volume ratio, therefore the house cat is greater the loss of heat to, or get from the environment than an African lion caged in the zoo.

The cell

Those are the definitions of cell:

Living things are structured of cells.
Living things may be unicellular or multicellular.
Cell structure is diverse but all cells share common characteristic.
All cells come only from other cells.
Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in organisms.

The cell

Today, I wanna share about cell in history and definition.

In 1685, Robert Hooke from England did a research for slice of cork was underneath the microscope. He found a hollow that called cell or cellule.

Robert brown (Scotland, 1831) found a smallest thing flew in protoplasm, it called nuclei.

Mathias Schleiden (botany) and Theodore Schwann (zoologies), in 1838 found the similarity in plant tissue and animal tissue. They submitted that the living things consisted of cell and cell was a structural unit of living things.

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek was the first men who observed and described a single-celled organisms.

( Robet Hooke and Cork Cell)

8 principles of living things

My first day in college, my lecture of biology said the basic to learn biology was to know there’re 8 principles of living things.

Those are 8 principles of living things:

The first, the living things consist of chemicals, such as carbohydrate, lipid, protein, and nucleate acid.
Secondly, the living things consist of cell.
Thirdly, body of the living things has the structures which concerned with function.
The fourth is the existence of energy and other substances to live.
Fifth is biodiversity. The living things have unity in biodiversity and continuity. They have interacted to each others.
Sixth is homeostasis, the living things could defend on internal condition.
Seventh is living things could do a reproduction, because of genome.
The last, living things in this century that came from previous. They’ve have done a bio-evolution. Evolution happened because of the natural section. The nature had selected of people who could survive.

The branches of science

Today, there are so many of the most interesting problems in science, I think It’s interesting to learn about science deeper, because today, knowledge and understanding of the world is more sophisticated and complicated that no one could possibly be at the border in such a wide variety of fields. So scientists work at many different tasks.

We’ve known the meaning of science. So, we’ve gotta know that science divided into several branches which are distinguished by the view and content of the questions. Several branches of science are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, and Astronomy. All of sciences are interconnected in a natural world.

The first is physics, which describes the most basic of nature, such as light, energy, forces, heat and other phenomena. Physic is the beginning detail for almost any study of how nature works.
The second is chemistry, the study about mixture of atoms. You know that chemicals form every material object in the world, chemical reaction initiative vital changes in our environment and our body.
Biology is the study of living systems. Geology is to learn about the origin, evolution, and present of our home, planet earth. The study of other planets is a way to understand the unique character of our world. And Astronomy is to learn about stars, planets, and other objects in space.

science

have you ever wondered why the sun rises at exactly in the East and sets in the West every day?
the question and answer called science

So, what's science??

Ancient humans and many other predictable appearance of nature took note about natural world like every day the sun rises at a precisely foreseeable time in the East and every day the sun sets in the West, and also too the phases of the moon and the season every year.and they spotted their lives and culture appropriately. And we call the process science.

According to the book I read science is a way of knowing, a way of asking and answering questions about the physical universe.

Science gives us "our most powerful tool to understand" how our wold works and how we interact with physical surrounding. And I think it's impressive to studying science :)
